    Merck selects UPS for distribution, package transportation services
    Merck & Co Inc (Whitehouse Station, NJ) selected UPS (Atlanta, GA) to manage a significant portion of its U.S. distribution of pharmaceuticals and vaccines and to provide package transportation services. UPS subsidiary UPS Supply Chain Solutions assumed control of two Merck distribution centers in Atlanta, Georgia and Reno, Nevada, which provide temperature-sensitive storage, packaging and transportation services critical to Merck's pharmaceutical and vaccine products.

    Deep Breeze receives FDA approval for lung imaging system
    Deep Breeze Ltd (Or-Akiva, ISR) received approval from the FDA (Rockville, MD) to market its lung imaging system in the U.S. The device will be marketed with GE Healthcare (Wauwatosa, WI), which is already marketing a similar imaging system developed by Deep Breeze. The lung imaging system can be used to measure breathing by the patient's bed in hospital intensive care units, and is radiation free and non-invasive.

    DiFUSION Technologies announces corporate launch
    DiFUSION Technologies Inc (Austin, TX) announced its corporate launch. The medical device company will target the orthopaedic market company and will focus on reducing the rising incidence of Surgical Site Infections (SSIs) in spinal surgeries. In 2009, the company plans to release a medical device that is capable of killing 650 types of bacteria including antibiotic-resistant bacteria such as MRSA in the local surgical wound for up to four weeks following surgery.     Eclipsys Corp acquires Premise
    Eclipsys Corp (Boca Raton, FL) signed a definitive agreement to acquire all of the outstanding equity interests of Premise (Farmington, CT), a privately held provider of integrated and clinical software solutions and services that optimize patient flow and streamline communications, including systems for bed management, bed turnover, transport and decision support. The purchase price is $38.5 million in cash, subject to certain holdback escrow provisions and working capital adjustments. The acquisition is expected to close by January 20, 2009.

    St. John Companies awarded GSA contract
    The St. John Companies (Valencia, CA), a provider of patient identification products, was awarded a five-year contract by the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) (Washington, DC). The agreement, effective December 1, 2008 through November 30, 2013, will provide GSA’s acute care facilities, as well as other GSA members and affiliates, direct access to special pre-negotiated terms for St. John Companies’ complete line of disposable medical products such as patient identification wristbands, labels, skin markers and X-Ray disposable cassette covers.

    Amedisys names Graham to board of directors
    Amedisys Inc (Baton Rouge, LA) appointed president and COO Larry R. Graham to the company's board of directors. Graham has been with the company since 1996. He became COO in 1999 and was appointed president in 2004. His nomination increases the number of directors to seven.

    The Joint Commission names Pelletier as executive director
    The Joint Commission (Oakbrook Terrace, IL) named Mark Pelletier as executive director of hospital programs and accreditation and certification services, effective immediately. He replaces Darlene Christiansen, who resigned in December 2008. Pelletier most recently served as SVP and COO of Condell Medical Center (Libertyville, IL).

    Tennessee Hospital Assoc reports staff, service cuts
    The Tennessee Hospital Association (Nashville, TN) reported that in a recent survey, more than half of the 82 hospital respondents have cut staff and most of the rest are considering cuts. About the same breakdown of hospitals have either reduced services or might reduce services due to the current economic climate. Almost all of the respondents reported growing costs for charity care, the medically indigent and bad debt.

    Correction: Nihon Kohden America acquires Neurotronics Inc
    Yesterday's edition of the Dail-E News stated that Nihon Kohden America Inc (Foothill Ranch, CA) acquired a 100 percent share of Neurotronics Incorporated (Gainesville, FL). Neurotronics was actually acquired by Nihon Kohden Corporation (Tokyo, JPN). The Dail-E News regrets the error.
